What is non-medical home care?

Non-medical home care refers to in-home support services that help individuals with daily activities rather than medical treatment. Caregivers assist with tasks such as bathing, dressing, meal preparation, light housekeeping, medication reminders, transportation, and companionship. This type of care allows seniors and individuals with disabilities to remain safely and comfortably in their own homes.

What is the difference between home care and home health care?

Home care (also called personal or companion care) focuses on non-medical daily living support, such as bathing, meal prep, and companionship, and is typically provided by trained caregivers. Home health care involves skilled medical services, like wound care, physical therapy, or medication administration, delivered by licensed nurses or therapists and usually ordered by a physician. Many families use both types of care together. Learn more about the differences between in-home care and home health care.

How much does in-home caregiving typically cost?

The cost of in-home care varies based on the number of hours needed, the level of care required, and geographic location. Most agencies charge an hourly rate, and costs can be lower than assisted living or nursing home care for part-time support. Contact your local Cornerstone Caregiving office for a personalized quote based on your specific needs.

Does Medicare cover in-home care services?

Original Medicare generally does not cover non-medical home care, such as help with bathing, dressing, or housekeeping, on an ongoing basis. It may cover short-term, medically necessary home health services ordered by a doctor. Many families pay for non-medical home care privately, through long-term care insurance, or through veterans’ benefits.

Will Medicaid or long-term care insurance help pay for home care?

In many states, Medicaid offers programs that help cover the cost of in-home care for eligible individuals, and long-term care insurance policies often include a home care benefit. Coverage and eligibility vary by state and policy, so it is best to review your specific plan or speak with a local care advisor to understand your options.

What type of services does a home caregiver provide?

Caregivers can provide a wide range of support, including personal care (bathing, grooming, dressing), companionship, meal preparation, light housekeeping, medication reminders, transportation to appointments, and mobility assistance. Care plans are customized to match each client’s needs, whether that means a few hours a week or around-the-clock support.

How do I know if my loved one needs in-home care?

Common signs include difficulty managing daily tasks like cooking, cleaning, or personal hygiene; missed medications; unexplained weight loss; frequent falls; isolation or withdrawal from social activities; and a home that has become harder to keep safe and clean. If you are noticing these changes, an in-home care assessment can help determine the right level of support.

What is respite care, and how does it help family caregivers?

Respite care provides temporary relief for family members who are the primary caregivers for a loved one. A trained caregiver steps in for a few hours, a day, or longer, allowing family caregivers to rest, run errands, travel, or simply recharge, while ensuring their loved one continues to receive attentive, quality care.

Can home care help someone with Alzheimer's or dementia?

Yes. Many caregivers receive specialized training in dementia and Alzheimer’s care, including techniques for communication, redirection, and creating safe, structured routines. In-home memory care support can help reduce confusion and agitation, improve safety, and allow individuals to remain in the familiar comfort of their own home longer.

How are caregivers screened, trained, and matched with client?

Reputable home care agencies conduct background checks, verify references, and require caregivers to complete training before working with clients. Caregivers are then matched based on the client’s specific care needs, personality, schedule, and preferences, and care plans are adjusted over time as needs change.

Can I choose or change my caregiver if it isn't a good fit?

Yes. A good home care agency will work closely with you to find a compatible caregiver and is responsive to feedback. If a caregiver isn’t the right match for any reason, most agencies can arrange a replacement to ensure your loved one remains comfortable and well cared for.

How quickly can home care services start?

In many cases, home care services can begin within a few days of an initial consultation, and some situations, such as a hospital discharge, may be accommodated even sooner. The exact timeline depends on caregiver availability and the complexity of the care plan needed.

Is home care available for just a few hours a day, or only full-time?

Home care is flexible and can be scheduled for just a few hours a week, several hours a day, overnight shifts, or full 24-hour live-in care. Care plans can also be adjusted over time as needs increase or decrease.

What is the difference between companion care and personal care?

Companion care focuses on social interaction, safety supervision, light housekeeping, and help with errands, ideal for individuals who are largely independent but benefit from company and support. Personal care includes more hands-on assistance, such as bathing, dressing, grooming, and mobility help, for individuals who need more direct physical support.

How does home care support recovery after a hospital stay or surgery?

After a hospital stay or surgery, a caregiver can help with medication reminders, mobility assistance, transportation to follow-up appointments, and daily tasks while the individual regains strength. This support can help reduce the risk of complications, falls, or hospital readmission during recovery.

Can home care help prevent falls and improve safety at home?

Yes. Caregivers help identify and reduce fall risks by assisting with mobility, monitoring for hazards, encouraging safe movement, and keeping living spaces tidy and clear of clutter. Having a trained caregiver present can significantly lower the risk of falls and provide peace of mind for family members.

What qualifications or certifications do caregivers have?

Caregiver qualifications vary by state and role but typically include background checks, CPR and first-aid training, and specialized training in areas like dementia care, personal care techniques, and safety protocols. Cornerstone Caregiving caregivers complete ongoing training to help ensure high-quality, consistent care.

How do I get started with scheduling an in-home care assessment?

Getting started is simple: contact your local Cornerstone Caregiving office to schedule a free, no-obligation in-home consultation. A care coordinator will assess your loved one’s needs, answer your questions, and help build a personalized care plan.

Is home care a good alternative to assisted living or a nursing home?

For many families, in-home care allows a loved one to age in place, in the comfort and familiarity of their own home, while still receiving the support they need. It can be a more personalized, one-on-one alternative to a facility setting, though the right choice depends on the individual’s specific care needs and safety considerations.

What should I look for when choosing a home care agency?

Look for an agency that is licensed and insured, conducts thorough caregiver background checks and training, offers flexible and customizable care plans, maintains strong communication with families, and comes recommended through reviews or referrals. A good agency will also offer a consultation to understand your needs before care begins.
