My grandmother, Beverly, was one of the most loving and kind women you could ever meet. She was an incredible host, with long brown hair, emerald green eyes, and a smile that made them sparkle. She had an extensive collection of Blue Willow china dishes, and every meal she prepared was elegantly plated on them and lovingly called her “Blue Plate Special.”

Her home was always spotless, and every spoon had a place. She was calm, consistent, and everything a child needs in a grandmother. Every time I put a spoon back in its “forever location,” I think of her.

Her Huntington’s caught up to her when I was in the fifth grade. First, she would write her name over and over—until she couldn’t anymore. I would get out of school and go straight to the nursing home to sit with her. To this day, I can’t pass a Blue Willow dish in an antique store without buying it. My cabinets are bursting at the seams with blue and white porcelain dishes that I lovingly plate every meal on—just like she did.

Every person is someone’s son, daughter, mother, father, etc., and we all deserve the dignity and respect earned from a lifetime of hard work and love—even when we have nothing left to give, because we’ve already given everything we had.

I moved a lot as a kid. But here, I found stability, love, and community.

I moved to Greenville when I was twenty-two. The last sixteen years have been some of the best of my life. I met my husband here almost fifteen years ago. He bought me a coffee at the Starbucks on 10th Street, and we’ve spoken every day since. I still smile every time I drive through for my latte.

I went to ECU and learned so much about myself and what I was capable of (although I graduated from NC State—hides face from my fellow Pirates, including my husband). I found my love for events while working at the Hilton in my early twenties. I adore decorating and hosting—events are where I shine brightest!

As a retirement specialist, I spent a lot of time teaching seniors about their benefits in their homes. I would spend hours talking with my clients and learning about their lives. I met so many wonderful people who taught me invaluable lessons. There is nothing I love more than learning from people who’ve spent a lifetime gaining wisdom through blood, sweat, and tears.

During the COVID lockdown, I went to my nearest testing site and asked how I could help. I started as an admin and made such an impact on my community and coworkers that I quickly advanced to Regional EOA for the State. I devoted those three years to making the world a better place.

Having a positive impact on the people around me is my “why.” I strive every day to raise the standard of living for every person I get the chance to impact. Hopefully, that inspires them to do the same—because that’s how communities are built and sustained. And there is nothing more important to me than community and family.
