Cornerstone Caregiving

As Cornerstone welcomes new leadership, I wanted to take the opportunity to share our family’s experience with one of your caregivers, Ivana. She continues to care for my father, John, who lives with Parkinson’s disease, and as we approach a full year of working with her, I can say without hesitation that she has become one of the most important people in his life—and in ours. Living with Parkinson’s means that no two days are exactly alike. Symptoms change, routines shift, emotions fluctuate, and what worked yesterday may not work today. Ivana meets those realities with remarkable patience, adaptability, and professionalism. She never approaches caregiving as a checklist of tasks to complete. Instead, she pays attention to the person in front of her, adjusting her approach to meet my father’s needs while always preserving his dignity, independence, and sense of self. Ivana is with my father every weekday, and her consistency has become an anchor for him. She brings not only dependable care but also warmth, humor, and genuine companionship. She affectionately calls him her “buddy,” and that simple nickname reflects the authentic relationship they have built over time. She knows when to encourage conversation, when to simply sit with him, when to make him laugh, and when to quietly support him through difficult moments. The trust between them has been earned day after day, and it has made an immeasurable difference in his quality of life. Our family witnessed Ivana’s extraordinary character during one of the most difficult periods of our lives. When my mother received an unexpected diagnosis that left her bedridden during the final weeks of her life, Ivana immediately stepped in to care for her as well. She treated my mother with dignity, gentleness, and compassion while also helping support the rest of our family as we navigated an overwhelming and heartbreaking time. After my mother’s passing, she continued to help my father adjust to life without his wife, offering quiet encouragement, steady companionship, and the kind of emotional support that cannot be taught in a training manual. What has impressed me just as much as Ivana’s compassion is her professionalism. She understands that excellent caregiving depends on teamwork and thoughtful communication. She works seamlessly alongside me, other family members, and other caregivers, sharing observations, coordinating care, and making sure everyone is working toward the same goal: providing my father with the best possible quality of life. She notices subtle changes in his mobility, mood, or energy, communicates those observations clearly, and adjusts her care accordingly. Just as importantly, she consistently contributes to a calm, respectful environment that helps my father feel safe, secure, and supported. One of the greatest gifts Ivana has given our family is peace of mind. Knowing that she is with my father each weekday allows us to focus less on worrying and more on simply being his family. Ivana has set such an extraordinarily high standard through her unwavering dedication and genuine investment in my father’s well-being. Too often, caregiving is measured by tasks completed. Our family has learned that the best caregivers do far more than that. They build trust. They preserve dignity. They notice what others might miss. They become a steady presence during life’s most difficult moments. Ivana embodies all of those qualities. She has become part of our family, and we are profoundly grateful that she is part of my father’s life. I hope Cornerstone’s new leadership knows what an exceptional caregiver they have in Ivana. She represents your organization with extraordinary professionalism, compassion, and integrity, and I cannot imagine anyone who better reflects what outstanding caregiving should look like.
