Understanding
the difference
Topics: | In-Home Care | Home Health |
|---|---|---|
Services | Help with activities of daily living such as light housekeeping, bathing, dressing, meal preparations etc. | Focuses on treatment and rehabilitation. Usually after hospital stay and during recovery. |
Care Team | Trained caregivers or home care aides. Focusing on personal care and companionship rather than clinical treatment. | Licensed nurses and physical or occupational therapists. Provide clinical care under doctor’s direction. |
Longevity of Care | Long-term or on-going: can be a time of brief respite or up to 24-hour care depending on family needs. | Short-Term, tied to a specific recovery plan or doctor’s order. Often lasting a few weeks or few months. |
Cost | While the exact cost of home care varies by location and number of hours needed, our pricing structure follows clear and consistent guidelines. | Usually higher per visit, but often covered by insurance or Medicare if medically necessary. |
Care Contracts | No Contracts, No Minimum Hours. | Doctor ordered care plan usually through a Medicare-certified home health agency. |
Customization of Care | Highly customizable. Tailored to your loved one’s needs and preferences. | Structured around medical treatment plan with limited flexibility. |
Type of Pay | Care plans that can be covered by private pay, veteran benefits, and long-term care insurance. Medicare applies to those who qualify. | Usually covered by Medicare, Medicaid, or private insurance with a doctor’s order. |
Americans Prefer Receiving Care at Home
74% of Americans say they would prefer to receive long-term care at home rather than in a nursing home or facility. This highlights the growing demand for personalized, in-home support options.
Home Care Supports Millions Across the Nation
12 million Americans receive some form of home care. Behind this number are families finding comfort, dignity, and quality of life where it matters most: at home.
Caregivers receive training in personal care, safety and communication. Many agencies perform background checks, reference verification, and ongoing education to ensure quality care.
We do our best to accommodate requests for specific caregivers whenever possible, taking into account compatibility and availability. Generally we take a care team approach ensuring that multiple people know your loved one and are able to provide a cohesive continuity of care at all times.
If your loved one needs medical treatment or therapy, start with home health. If they need daily living assistance or companionship, choose in-home care. One can also combine both for maximum support.
If your loved one needs hospice, their primary care support should come from a hospice agency, not traditional home health and or standard in-home care. However, families can still benefit from additional in-home caregiver support alongside hospice.
